hunter complex - hunter complex outside frontWie een karakterschets wil maken van platen van het Nederlandse undergroundlabel Narrominded, komt automatisch uit bij termen als elektronische fijnproeverij, hiphopritmen en jaren ’90 IDM. Dat deze elementen garant kunnen staan voor zeer straf, progressief materiaal hoeft geen vertoog. Hunter Complex, één van de projecten van labelstichter Lars Meijer, knalt daar nog een gezonde hap wave en elektro bij. Dit titelloze debuut, dat luchtige laptopstructuren van een meer ernstige ondertoon voorziet, grijpt terug naar nog een ouder technologietijdperk, namelijk naar de mechanische muziek van de zwartgallige 80’s. De fijngevoeligheid blijft echter behouden.

Zoals zijn naam doet vermoeden, kiest Hunter Complex niet altijd voor de meest eenvoudige oplossingen. Dit album bevat immers veel knipogen naar elektropopbands als Depeche Mode of OMD, maar verschuilt zijn melodieuze, vocale synthesizermuziek achter een onrustig geheel van droge, mechanische ritmen. Zo ontstaan elektrotracks die voortdurend uit balans lijken te liggen. Nu eens vagen voorop liggende, ratelende ritmen de fijngevoelige techniek weg, dan weer duiken luidruchtige space-synthesizers op die met een wall of sound alles overstemmen. Toch wordt het feitelijke popkarakter van de plaat nooit helemaal verdreven, hoewel Hunter Complex er wel moeite voor lijkt te doen. Komt het door die onvervormde, vrij oppervlakkige en teruggetrokken (onverstaanbare) zang die deze muziek wat bevreemd of houdt Meijer er gewoon niet van om helemaal in het rijtje te lopen? In elk geval maakt deze werkwijze het wel mogelijk Fashion Street te voorzien van een extra psychedelische, zwevende klankdeken en diepe dubbassen en krijgt het daaropvolgende, kale elektronicanummer Moonset een enorme duw in de rug met een geluidsmuur van gestoorde samples en harde slagritmen. Het duurt dan ook een tijdje vooraleer dit album echt helemaal doorsijpelt. Wie echter beseft dat dit veel meer is dan een ongebalanceerd geheel en zich laat onderdompelen in deze intrigerende muziek, realiseert zich meteen dat dit de manier is waarop de jaren ’80 in 2010 dienen te klinken!

Hoewel Lars Meijer er zelf mee afkomt, is een term als ‘popliedjes’ hier toch niet helemaal op zijn plaats. Wat eenvoudig lijkt, gaat om een ingenieuze elektronicapuzzel. Zeker weten dat er ettelijke uurtjes laptop- en slaapkamergeneuzel zijn geslopen in deze licht gestoorde synthwave-songs!

Lars Meijer – samen met Coen Oscar Polack labelbaas van Narrominded – keert met Hunter Complex terug naar zijn wortels als liedjesschrijver. Al blijft hij de elektronica, waarmee hij experimenteerde in Psychon (Troopers) en Living Ornaments, trouw. Gouden combinatie, zo blijkt op dit debuut. Meijer klinkt als de bastaardneef van Keulenaar Popnoname. Net zo poppy en op momenten net zo slick, maar behept met een bovenmatige fascinatie voor het verleden.
De jaren tachtig om precies te zijn: Cabaret Voltaire, OMD, Gary Numan, New Order, maar ook obscure Italodisco en vroege house klinken door. Retro? Ja, maar niet te. Hunter Complex is te eigenzinnig voor het predikaat pastiche. Daarvoor hinkt Meijer teveel op twee gedachten. Aan de ene kant is er die romantische nostalgie die zo typerend is voor het geluid van analoge synthesizers, aan de andere kant is de productie lekker vol, kreunt Meijer wat af en lonkt hij opzichtig naar Europese disco. In afsluiter Mean Street komen die drie elementen samen. Resultaat? Prachtige, bijna dubby synthpopdisco die niet had misstaan op de albums van Meat Beat Manifesto of Renegade Soundwave, begin jaren negentig. pics: ethisch reveil, havenkwartier, deventer - january 22 20101. Hello. Can you, please, tell something shortly about yourself, for example: what are your current plans, what are your influences for the music of Hunter Complex (your new music project), what does retro-futurism mean to you?
Lars Meijer: I started to record my debut album as Hunter Complex two years ago. I always had the idea to record an album again on my own. In the late nineties I released two records under the name Larz. Those were really lo-fi, recorded on 4-track, with a piano as the main instrument. But after those albums I wanted to do more than record on a 4-track. I started experimenting with loop based songs on mini-disc, but that didn’t work out really. Around that time, we are talking about 2000, I started improvising with two friends of mine, Jantijn Prins and Coen Oscar Polack, and we also used a computer to make beats and stuff. I moved away from recording solo material, but a couple of years ago I started to have that urge again. Coen encouraged me to repair an old synth I had laying around, and I also bought Yamaha DX7, a synth from the eighties which has a sound that I have always loved. Then the songs came back and this new album emerged. I’m currently working on some new songs, one of which is going to be released on Enfant Terrible, a great Dutch label that focuses on retro-futurism and eighties re-issues. The term retro-futurism is new for me. The sound of the eighties I never saw as a dated thing. I grew up with it, that stuff is in my blood. So it’s not looking back, it’s going back to where I’m coming from, and from there I will see where this is going.

2. Do you plan to continue with your other music projects, Psychon and Living Ornaments? The album Korrels by Living Ornaments from the previous year is fantastic!
LM: Thanks for the compliment! Korrels took a long time to make, especially because Coen Oscar Polack and I were focusing more on making music as solo musicians. He is really gotten into field recordings and drone stuff, and I’m into making songs again, and singing, so we are on a bit of different tracks right now. But we still have some music laying around that’s great, but we have no plans yet to get back together again and start working on that. With Psychon we are about to record an EP. We bought sixty records of 1 euro per lp, and those lp’s are going to be the basis of the EP. With Psychon we work really slow, record every 4 months or so. So that will take a couple of years to see the light of day.

3. What are the new plans for Narrominded?
LM: We are trying to keep up the release schedule we started with in 2009. We have a great record coming up by Puin + Hoop, three guys who use whatever they can find to make these intense drones and soundscapes. Really beautiful. Also coming up is a record by Gijs Borstlap en Kruno Jost, electro-acoustic manipulated noise. And a new record by Fine China Superbone, a really tight noise outfit from The Hague, will finally come out this spring. And there’s lots more music coming.

4. What music do you listen and like, from the most recent and new releases?
LM: I’m currently into the last record by JJ, JJ No. 3, a great esoteric pop group from Gothenburg, who are on the same label as The Tough Alliance, who made the best record of the previous century. Also I’m listening to the latest Robert Pollard a lot. You know, the guy from Guided By Voices. That record is called We All Got Out Of The Army and is his best solo album to date. Too bad he doesn’t get the attention he got while he was still with GBV, because this guy is still evolving as a songwriter. And I’ve been playing some old Wang Chung and Thompson Twins records. That shit is timeless.

hunter complex - hunter complex outside frontWe hadden afgelopen zaterdagavond een jaren ’80-feestje van mijn werk. Hierbij mocht je ook verkleed komen als je wilde. Mevrouw Storm trok wat zwarts aan en toupeerde d’r haar en ik trok de strakste broek aan die ik nog had met een vaal hardrock shirtje. Er is niet zo heel veranderd aan ons door de jaren heen. Nu ja, we hebben wat meer vierkante meters stof nodig, dat wel. Voor in de auto op weg naar en van het feestje had ik eerst wat jaren tachtig cd’s mee willen nemen, maar besloot uiteindelijk toch wat nieuws, namelijk Hunter Complex, op te zetten. Dat had namelijk ook zo uit de jaren tachtig kunnen komen. De synthpop van dit nieuwe project van Lars Meijer is zo retro, dat ik ’em er bijna van zou gaan verdenken dat Meijer dit al dik twintig jaar op de plank heeft laten liggen voordat hij er mee op de proppen durfde te komen. Als je een paar van deze tracks verstopt had tussen de krakers op een van de New Wave Club ClassX-verzamelaars en niemand zou ’em als verdacht brandmerken. Hunter Complex is door het vernuftig schuiven met lagen tegelijkertijd ijzingwekkend koel als melancholisch ontroerend. Dat eerste komt vooral door de lijzige stem van Meijer, het is er een die mensen best af zou kunnen stoten, maar ik houd wel van dat onderkoelde. Het melancholische zit ’em in geweldige ouderwets klinkende synths die Meijer van stal gehaald heeft. Je krijgt visioenen van OMD, New Order en Kraftwerk en dwaalt zo af op de grotendeels rustig voortkabbelende tracks richting traag dansende zwartgekleden op de dansvloer. Die op het up-tempo Moonset uiteindelijk compleet uit hun dak zullen gaan. Voor mijn jaren tachtig feestje was Hunter Complex natuurlijk veel te obscuur en nicherig, maar om te ontgiften van de Bon Jovi’s en andere narigheid uit de jaren tachtig die ik die avond voorgeschoteld kreeg was het perfect. En om ‘zo’ te luisteren overigens ook.

hunter complex - hunter complex outside frontHunter Complex is the new moniker of Lars Meijer, who runs the label Narrominded and is also involved with few other musical acts: Larz, Psychon/Psychon Troopers, with a more ambient/atmospheric/improvised kind of sound and Living Ornaments, who had an amazing album, Korrels, the previous year, with a more melodic/rhythmic/idm kind of sound, but also with elements of experiment. But Hunter Complex is totally different! The album was announced with the wonderful EP Here Is The Night, where besides the original version of the title song and the extended instrumental version of the song Fashion Street (from the album), there are 3 interesting remixes of Here Is The Night, by Garcon Taupe, Spoelstra and Coen Oscar Polack, of which specially interesting are the crazy version of Garcon Taupe and the ambiental version of Coen Oscar Polack. The self-titled album is a story of it’s own. Stilistically it ranges from synthpop/new wave to electro, with elements of italo disco, all woven well in the music. Retro-futurism, focusing on the past and on the future at the same time. Some of the songs are a real uncanny candies, like Wait, Cross, Fashion Street and Chinese Restaurants… I’ve always considered the synth-pop as the lonelier kind of music. Or music that grows with time! Fine album!

hunter complex - hunter complex outside frontHunter Complex, aka Dutch artist Lars Meijer, releases his debut album on his own Narrominded imprint, a label we’ve grown to love because of its leftfield and adventurous releases. Hunter Complex: retrofuturism never sounded so fresh.

Fact is that today’s music industry is constantly overrun by musical nitwits trying to ‘revive’ the 80s with horrific rip-offs and downright annoying shenanigans (Lady! Gaga! Argh!), but fear not! Hunter Complex’ debut album is a completely different kettle of fish. The 12 tracks on this album all pay homage to the 80s era in their very own way without a single bit of cheesiness to be heard. Roughly, the album’s sound can be described as glam pop Miami Vice-style, with strong references to electroclash and electrofunk, which results in a very adventurous trip down nostalgia lane. Take Cross for instance, one of the many highlights on this album. The tune opens with theatrical synths but soon emerges into a funky Italo/space disco tune, while Moonset embarks on a much darker and sinister trip with throbbing bass and a spacey cosmic vibe. Synth pop junkies will love Turn for its mesmerizing synthesizer work, while fans of bands such as Depeche Mode and The Cure will go ape on the experimental Kerosine.

Buy because: you’re a sucker for that typical 80s sound, whilst not holding back on your love for Italo and electro either.
Don’t because: the only reason we can think of that your dad might pop up and start reminiscing about ‘those good ol’ days…’

hunter complex - hunter complex outside frontTja, wat moet je ervan zeggen. Het feit dat je weet waar de aan-knop op je Casio-keyboard zit, wil nog niet zeggen dat er een Phil Spector in je schuilt. Wanneer de partner van de recensent tijdens een afwas/ luistersessie dan ook nog eens wild met de afwasborstel naar de stereo begint te slaan, is dat over het algemeen een veeg teken aan de wand. Uit bijgeleverde informatie begrijp ik dat Lars ‘Hunter Complex’ Meijer zichzelf wel een genie vindt. Ik niet.

Hunter Complex is the moniker under which Dutchman Lars Meijer has been making music for the past few years. His music has strong references to the eighties when Italo disco, synthpop and new wave ruled the airwaves. Although a bit more electro based, Hunter Complex can be described as a mix between 80s icons such as Neon Neon and a diet version of The Human League, while also incorporating Kraftwerkian and M83 elements. Retrofuturistic so to say…

The Hunter Complex album contains 12 tracks jam packed with analogue drums, vintage synthesizers and unmistakably 80s song patterns. Opening track Wait kick starts the album with a booming electro rhythm, vocoded vox and glorious 80s synthesizers, immediately establishing a retro vibe bursting with quality. The dreamy Dance balances on the brink of electro, electroclash and electrofunk, while tunes such as Cross and especially Moonset are remarked by a more playful and energetic approach. Diversity within a specific sound is what defines this album best. Hunter Complex manages to create 12 unique songs that are made up using retro elements, but still manage to sound incredibly fresh, crisp and balanced. Take Turn for instance. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if I was watching an episode of Miami Vice and hear this one during a chase between Crockett, Tubbs, and a bunch of Colombian moustache-rocking baddies. No sir.

I can be fairly short on this one: This album is an essential item for 80s fanatics, retro junkies, electro heads and synthpop rockers alike. Each song features a magnificent and well balanced structure that finds it origin somewhere in the area between dance and pop, with the vocals adding a certain pop element to the overall in a Kraftwerk kind of way. Recommended!

hunter complex - hunter complex outside frontOnlangs verscheen bij Narrominded de ep Here Is The Night van Hunter Complex. Ondergetekende schreef hierover dat deze hem benieuwd maakte naar het toen nog niet verschenen debuutalbum van Hunter Complex. Dit titelloze album is inmiddels uitgebracht en helaas weet Lars Meijer, de man achter Hunter Complex, de verwachtingen niet helemaal waar te maken. Muzikaal gezien ligt het materiaal op Hunter Complex in het verlengde van Here Is The Night. Veelal donkere synthpop met een duidelijke invloed uit de jaren ’80 en daarnaast vlagen van Electro, Italo en New Wave.

Het album opent met het aardige Wait, dat vrij melodieus is. Het inmiddels bekende Here Is The Night is veel hoekiger en bevat lage, monotone zang, die wel wat doet denken aan die van The Edge in U2’s Numb. In tegenstelling tot wat de titel doet vermoeden is Dance een vrij traag nummer. Het uptempo Moonset is daarentegen wel lekker dansbaar.

Ook Black is een leuk nummer, waar een vrij prominent baslijntje in zit en dit geldt ook voor Fashion Street. De keyboardpartijen aan het begin van Cross zijn overduidelijk van Kraftwerk afgekeken en ook verder is het eerste gedeelte van deze song sterk beïnvloed door de Duitse elektronicapioniers. Verderop gaat Cross echter meer richting de jaren ‘80.

Hunter Complex bevat zeker een aantal goede songs, maar het album weet de aandacht niet tot het eind vast te houden. Dit komt vooral doordat het materiaal na verloop van tijd een beetje eentonig begint te worden, iets wat overigens mede wordt veroorzaakt door het nogal vlakke geluid. Verder gaat er van de zang Meijer te weinig overtuiging uit.
