We last year reviewed the album Heat of Hunter Complex. The 2nd full length of the Dutch musician Lars Meijer holds onto the vintage electro-experimental touch and features pop elements.

Hours is the 2nd single taken from this album and the least I can say is that this is an excellent title song. The EP opens with the ‘original’ version revealing a cool vintage electro-pop style animated by fine bleeps and embellished with sweet vocal parts.

We next get 2 remixes of songs originally released on Heat as well. The remix of Serious Glass by The No is driven by a bombastic repetitive rhythm and vocals reminding me of shoegaze productions. It’s an interesting experimental pop music format. The minimal approach of the Highway Hypnosis-remix by Drvg Cvltvre is another interesting cut. Next to the minimal style there also is a rather evasive melody part totally achieving this remix. This is a beautiful song.

I regret there’re no remixes and/or alternative versions of Hours. I think it would have been a bonus for this EP. Hours wants to ‘persuade the listener to tune in to a strange mix of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter film scores and ’81-’82 era Simple Minds’. It’s a rather strange definition claimed by Hunter Complex, but it probably says something about their potential sources of inspiration.

Conclusion: Hunter Complex composes a very own pop-style, which is merging retro-electro influences together with a pure experimental & minimal element.

hunter complex-hoursThis new release is a digital single from the already reviewed last album from this outfit. As stated in my review, the musical outcome is ‘a sort of modern postcard from a distant era’ and is something that, perhaps for the nostalgic effect, is really easy listening in the best meaning of the word. The first track is the second single taken from Heat and is constructed as an almost classic synth pop track from the early ’80s with luminous melodic development. The really interesting part is the two remixes: the first one, from The No, is focused on the juxtaposition of an hard edge beat over the melodic lines of Serious Glass, while the second one, from Drvg Cvltvre, entirely deconstructs Highway Hypnosis taking it in darker and more evocative territories making and interesting use of noises as it doesn’t erase the pop allure of the tune. As almost every single this is a collector’s item, however the Drvg Cvltvre remix is something worth a listen and could even acts as a possible line of development for Hunter Complex. Nice.

hunter complex-hoursPeople who are familiar with the Dutch label Narrominded probably will agree that Hunter Complex, the project from Lars Meijer is the most radio friendly artist in their catalogue. Not that they play it on the radio, but it could be.

Hours is the second single that is taken from the Heat-album and you’ll find, apart from the title track, two mixes from both Drvg Cvltvre and The No.

It’s hard to pin down the style but I think that you can say that Hours sound like a minimal version from a Miami Vice added with a touch of early Clan Of Xymox. Yeah, I know…talking about strange combinations!

But seeing that this single has been made with the heavenly Yamaha DX7 makes me feel that I’m right! And before you start laughing, Miami Vice is the coolest thing I can think of.

The man behind the music, Lars Meijer explores a fascinating soundworld and captures the pivotal point in cultural history where analogue handed over to digital. Driving sequencers, sparkling DX7s, power leads and smokey vocals stride into a bold over saturated VHS future world. Cool as flip.

hunter complex-hoursVorig jaar kende Hunter Complex met het album Heat een carrièrehoogtepunt. Het album, ook wel omschreven als een mix van Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter film scores en Simple Minds anno 1981/82 werd goed ontvangen in de internationale pers.

De fraaie albumafsluiter Hours is recentelijk verkozen tot tweede single van de plaat. Een nummer dat binnen vijf minuten een breed scala aan sferen neerlegt middels de mooiste eighties-elektronica die de laatste tijd in Nederland werd gefabriceerd.

Als extra’s komen er nog twee interessante remixen voorbij, beiden van Heat-tracks. Serious Glass werd door het audio-grafische project The No onder handen genomen. Dit resulteert in een flinke EBM en darkwave-injectie die er mag wezen. Vergeleken met de albumversie is deze single-versie beduidend meer upfront. Prima remix.

Drvg Cvulture nam in het verleden op voor roemruchte undergroundlabels als KK en Bunker en was ook te horen op de prachtige verzamelaar Retro Retry 2: Another Another Green World uit 2009. Hij trekt ruim zeven minuten uit voor het opbouwen van zijn versie van Highway Hypnosis. Deze even weelderige als donkere mix geeft een heel nieuwe dimensie aan het oorspronkelijke, verheven highway-gevoel van het orgineel.

Wie nieuwsgierig is naar het live-geluid van Hunter Complex kan op 6 juni terecht in het Patronaat in Haarlem.

hunter complex-hoursSteeds meer bands grijpen terug naar de jaren 80, hetgeen voor mij misschien wel de meest belangrijke dan wel interessante muziekperiode is geweest. Daarom van mijn kant geen klachten en zeker niet als het zo goed gebracht wordt als de Nederlandse groep Hunter Complex. Het is het project van Lars Meijer, één van de oprichters van het Narrominded label, die tevens te vinden is in de groepen Larz, Living Ornament, Psychon en Psychon Troopers. Deze muzikale duizendpoot beweegt zich doorgaans in de meer abstracte elektronische vaarwateren, maar toont met zijn nieuwe kindje aan ook goed uit de voeten te kunnen met fraaie retro sounds, waarbij synthpop, wave, aantrekkelijke beats en donkere zang op verrukkelijke wijze samengaan. Hij laat eerder al het gelijknamige debuut (2010) en de lp Heat (2013) het licht zien. Van die laatste verschijnt eerder ook al een single.
Nu is er de tweede, digitale single van dat album, te weten Hours. Hier krijg je de albumtrack Hours plus twee remixen van de nummers Serious Glass en Highway Hypnosis, die bij elkaar goed zijn voor een kwartier aan overheerlijke, nostalgische muziek. Op de originelen hoor je al de muziek van Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Clan Of Xymox, Simple Minds, Suicide, He Said, Wire, OMD, New Order en Depeche Mode langs komen, maar in de remixen worden bepaalde elementen extra onderstreept. In Serious Glass (The No Remix) zijn het voluptueuze beats die het verschil maken en het nummer in het midden van VNV Nation, Joy Division en Clan Of Xymox weet te plaatsen. De mix van Highway Hypnosis door Vincent Koreman aka Drvg Cvltvre brengt een meer rudimentair en duister geheel ten gehore dat neigt naar de EBM van Frontline Assembly en Skinny Puppy, maar dan met een opgewekte beat. Het is hoe dan ook voer voor de melancholici en wave fans onder ons.

hunter complex-hoursDe beelden uit John Carpenter’s horrorklassieker The Fog (1980) zijn niet voor niets gekozen bij deze sfeerrijke nieuwe single Hours van het Nederlandse Hunter Complex, het alias van muzikant/producer Lars Meijer. De track begint namelijk klinkend als een elektronische soundtrack bij een griezelfilm uit de jaren tachtig, als een soort eerbetoon aan Carpenter zelf die immers eigenhandig muziek componeerde bij veel van zijn films. Maar al gauw ontpopt de track zich tot een vlotte synthpoptrack met nachtelijke feel, die dankzij het gebruik van een Roland D-50 and Yamaha DX7 zo in de jaren tachtig opgenomen had kunnen zijn.

Hours staat op het jongste Hunter Complex-album Heat van vorig jaar, uit via label Narrominded. De single van Hours is nu uit, inclusief remixen van The No en Drvg Cvltvre, desgewenst te streamen op SoundCloud.

hunter complex-hoursObviously we don’t review digital releases, but this landed as a CDR on my desk, and I started writing, before realizing this. Now, perhaps, this has to do with the fact that I quite enjoy the music of Hunter Complex, of Narromind Mastermind Lars Meijer. This is the second single of his LP Heat – I didn’t realize people still release singles from LPs as that sounds like something from my childhood – but Hours is a great piece of 80s inspired pop music (check also my review of the LP in Vital Weekly 896). The No does a remix of Serious Glass and make it sound also very 80s, but in a more dark wave styled guise, with a voice that sounds like from beyond the grave. Nice. Drvg Cvltvre is Vincent Koremans (RA-X might be know still!) with a long ambient w/rhythm inspired piece called Highway Hypnosis and sounds like Tangerine Dream on ecstasy, especially when the rhythm kicks in after some time. Be careful driving cars while listening to this music. Now, in a just and right world, this would have been a great 12″. Where did the 80s go? I do miss them.

hunter complex-hoursHunter Complex bracht in september van 2013 de langspeler Heat uit via Narrominded. Om die plaat nogmaals extra in het zonnetje te zetten, komt er een tweede single van het album. Hours zal digitaal, met twee bonustracks, gereleased worden.
De ’80-electronica van Hunter Complex heeft vocalen die doen denken aan zowel Simple Minds als Pet Shop Boys. Titeltrack Hours doet daar dan ook sterk aan denken. Het is typisch jaren ’80, maar dan in een volle mix anno 2014. De twee andere tracks worden onder handen genomen door andere mixers. DRVG CVLTURE heeft Highway Hypnosis onder handen mogen nemen. De opbouw van het nummer geeft een mysterieus tintje mee aan deze release.
Met de single Hours vestigt Hunter Complex in positieve zin de aandacht op zich. Liefhebbers van electronica a la ‘80’s, zullen deze release zeker een kans moeten geven.

hunter complex - heat frontPrince, de kleine muzikale reus. Wanneer ik Hunter Complex hoor moet ik altijd aan de Amerikaanse wereldster denken. Niet dat er een muzikale connectie is tussen die twee, behalve dan dat de man achter Hunter Complex, Lars Meijer, een groot fan is van de popgeweldenaar. Zijn werk heeft daar echter weinig mee te maken. Onder de naam Hunter Complex brengt hij sinds 2010 jaren 1980 geïnspireerde synth pop uit.

Heat, het tweede album van een van de mannen achter het label Narrominded, leunt even goed op de analoge synthesizers als de voorganger, maar breng daar meer dreiging en diepte in. Het is als een soundtrack bij een film waarin niets is zoals het lijkt en een liefelijk tafereeltje dus een horror soundtrack krijgt. Voortdurend wringt en wrijft de elektronica van Hunter Complex, wat een album maakt dat je van begin tot eind bij de lurven neemt en bij de les houdt.
