Fact is that today’s music industry is constantly overrun by musical nitwits trying to ‘revive’ the 80s with horrific rip-offs and downright annoying shenanigans (Lady! Gaga! Argh!), but fear not! Hunter Complex’ debut album is a completely different kettle of fish. The 12 tracks on this album all pay homage to the 80s era in their very own way without a single bit of cheesiness to be heard. Roughly, the album’s sound can be described as glam pop Miami Vice-style, with strong references to electroclash and electrofunk, which results in a very adventurous trip down nostalgia lane. Take Cross for instance, one of the many highlights on this album. The tune opens with theatrical synths but soon emerges into a funky Italo/space disco tune, while Moonset embarks on a much darker and sinister trip with throbbing bass and a spacey cosmic vibe. Synth pop junkies will love Turn for its mesmerizing synthesizer work, while fans of bands such as Depeche Mode and The Cure will go ape on the experimental Kerosine.

Buy because: you’re a sucker for that typical 80s sound, whilst not holding back on your love for Italo and electro either.
Don’t because: the only reason we can think of that your dad might pop up and start reminiscing about ‘those good ol’ days…’

Hunter Complex is the moniker under which Dutchman Lars Meijer has been making music for the past few years. His music has strong references to the eighties when Italo disco, synthpop and new wave ruled the airwaves. Although a bit more electro based, Hunter Complex can be described as a mix between 80s icons such as Neon Neon and a diet version of The Human League, while also incorporating Kraftwerkian and M83 elements. Retrofuturistic so to say…

The Hunter Complex album contains 12 tracks jam packed with analogue drums, vintage synthesizers and unmistakably 80s song patterns. Opening track Wait kick starts the album with a booming electro rhythm, vocoded vox and glorious 80s synthesizers, immediately establishing a retro vibe bursting with quality. The dreamy Dance balances on the brink of electro, electroclash and electrofunk, while tunes such as Cross and especially Moonset are remarked by a more playful and energetic approach. Diversity within a specific sound is what defines this album best. Hunter Complex manages to create 12 unique songs that are made up using retro elements, but still manage to sound incredibly fresh, crisp and balanced. Take Turn for instance. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if I was watching an episode of Miami Vice and hear this one during a chase between Crockett, Tubbs, and a bunch of Colombian moustache-rocking baddies. No sir.

I can be fairly short on this one: This album is an essential item for 80s fanatics, retro junkies, electro heads and synthpop rockers alike. Each song features a magnificent and well balanced structure that finds it origin somewhere in the area between dance and pop, with the vocals adding a certain pop element to the overall in a Kraftwerk kind of way. Het album opent met het aardige Wait, dat vrij melodieus is. Het inmiddels bekende Here Is The Night is veel hoekiger en bevat lage, monotone zang, die wel wat doet denken aan die van The Edge in U2’s Numb. In tegenstelling tot wat de titel doet vermoeden is Dance een vrij traag nummer. Het uptempo Moonset is daarentegen wel lekker dansbaar.

Ook Black is een leuk nummer, waar een vrij prominent baslijntje in zit en dit geldt ook voor Fashion Street. De keyboardpartijen aan het begin van Cross zijn overduidelijk van Kraftwerk afgekeken en ook verder is het eerste gedeelte van deze song sterk beïnvloed door de Duitse elektronicapioniers. Verderop gaat Cross echter meer richting de jaren ‘80.

Hunter Complex bevat zeker een aantal goede songs, maar het album weet de aandacht niet tot het eind vast te houden. Dit komt vooral doordat het materiaal na verloop van tijd een beetje eentonig begint te worden, iets wat overigens mede wordt veroorzaakt door het nogal vlakke geluid. Verder gaat er van de zang Meijer te weinig overtuiging uit.

Hoe was de release van je debuut op 5 februari in Smart Project Space?

Ja, dat was een tof feestje. Smart Project Space is echt een leuke tent en het was ook nog eens superdruk. Tijdens mijn set gebruikte ik als decor de film To Live and Die in LA, een film met Willem Dafoe uit 1985. Die Miami Vice-achtige sfeer van de film paste echt perfect en dat maakte het optreden extra leuk.

Hoe zou jij je stijl omschrijven?

Het is voornamelijk synthpop. Ik gebruik veel synthesizers en die hebben een grote invloed op mijn muziek. Denk aan het oude werk van Depeche Mode en A-ha, de jaren ’80 zit er heel erg in. De leukste elektronica wordt volgens mij in Europa gemaakt. Amerika ligt al een tijdje op zijn gat wat dat betreft.

Waarom de jaren ‘80?

Ik ben geboren in ’77, in ’85 was ik acht. Op die leeftijd was muziek al heel erg belangrijk voor mij. Dus de popmuziek van toen heeft de basis gelegd voor mijn smaak. Op de een of andere manier blijft de muziek uit je jeugd toch het meest dichtbij je. Ik begon ook met de toetsen spelen in die tijd.

Hoe maak je die jaren ’80 invloeden modern?

Als ik muziek aan het maken ben, zit ik echt compleet in mijn eigen wereldje en ben ik helemaal niet mee bezig met wat voor muziek er op dat moment gemaakt wordt. Mijn muzieksmaak ligt denk ik al redelijk vast. Uiteraard ontwikkel je jezelf nog wel, maar de basis is helder.

Je hebt een label in Zweden, Sincerely Yours, die kijken ook terug naar de jaren ’80, maar ze maken muziek van nu. Het klinkt fris. Dat heb ik zelf ook voor ogen. Ik heb ook het gevoel dat ik niet de enige ben die met dit soort muziek bezig is, en dat werkt heel motiverend.

Hoe lang ben je bezig geweest met je debuut cd?

Ik denk dat ik er twee jaar mee bezig ben geweest. In het begin was het heel moeilijk, want ik wist niet precies welke kant ik op wilde. Ik wist wel dat ik weer liedjes wilde gaan maken zoals ik rond de eeuwwisseling deed. Uiteindelijk ging het vrij snel en kon ik echt flink doorknallen. Een paar maanden later was het klaar.

Wat zijn nu je plannen en voor de toekomst?

Ik heb nu even geen optredens staan, die ben ik aan het regelen. Eerst moesten alle promo’s eruit. Ik wil eerst veel gaan spelen in Nederland, kijken hoe dat gaat. En dan misschien een tourtje door Europa. En daarnaast ben ik eigenlijk meteen weer begonnen aan de volgende plaat.

Het tweede album zal wel weer even duren, maar ik merk al wel dat het heel anders klinkt dan mijn debuutalbum. Mijn debuutalbum klinkt vrij recht door zee, de volgende wordt misschien iets zweveriger, er zit veel meer lucht in.

Wat is de beste gelegenheid om jouw muziek te beluisteren?

Een koude winterse dag, met een hele scherpe laaghangende zon, waar je dan recht tegenin fietst. Als je in de roes van het moment zit. Daar past mijn muziek wel bij. Ik hou zelf ook hele erg van dat soort momenten. In mijn muziek zit dat ongrijpbare gevoel. Dat je weemoedig wordt, maar ook vrolijk.

Als opwarmertje voor het album heeft Narrominded de ep Here Is the Night uitgebracht. Deze ep is op cd verkrijgbaar, maar ook gratis te downloaden. Op Here Is the Night vinden we vier versies van de gelijknamige track en daarnaast de Extended Instrumental versie van het nummer Fashion Street.

Na de lo-fi pop van Larz en de experimentele elektronica van Psychon en Living Ornaments, gooit Meijer het met Hunter Complex over de synthpop boeg. De albumversie van Here Is the Night is een donker synthpopnummer met een duidelijk jaren ’80 gevoel en nogal monotone zang. Een geslaagd nummer dat veel goeds belooft voor het album.

Hierna volgt een drietal remixen van Here Is the Night, waarvan die van Spoelstra het dichtst bij het origineel blijft. De remix van Garçon Taupe begint met tribal-achtige ritmes uit een doosje en eindigt met toongeneratorgeluiden die we ook kennen uit Eboman’s Donuts With Buddah. Coen Oscar Polack’s Morning Version van Here Is the Night is een zeer trage ambientversie.

De afsluitende track op Here Is The Night is Fashion Street in de Extended Instrumental versie. Dit is een rustige poptrack met eveneens een duidelijke link naar de jaren ’80, compleet met foute gitaarsolo. Het nummer is echter lang niet zo donker als Here Is the Night.

Here Is the Night is een interessante ep, waarvan vooral de titeltrack ons nieuwsgierig maakt naar het album van Hunter Complex.

Hunter Complex is the moniker of Lars Meijer. On his self titled debut album he moves from synthpop to electro and from italo to new wave. Just like the European electronic acts The Tough Alliance, Neon Neon, JJ, M83 and Delorean, there’s an imperative reference to the eighties in the music of Hunter Complex. Not only in the sound, but especially because of that intangible feeling. Meijer: ‘It’s a feeling that switches between whimsicality and melancholy. You can see that for example in Miami Vice – true television of the eighties: subtropical beaches, flamingos, but also nocturnal streets full of muggy evil.’

Around the turn of the century, under the name Larz, he created two lo-fi pop albums that reached a cult-status internationally. ‘Call Larz another bedroom genius – which he is, but he’s got that extra bit of special something about him’, Allmusic.com said at the time. In the years after his Larz albums Meijer broadened himself in experimental electronic music with the groups Psychon and Living Ornaments. With the last act his also released music on the legendary Skam label. Meijer: ‘After these experiments I thought it was time for pop music again. I’ve been walking around with the idea of this record full of synthpop songs for a long time, but in the last ten years I’ve finally learned how to actually produce it.’

Lars Meijer and Coen Oscar Polack, the two minds behind the label narrominded as well as various musical projects, amongst them Hunter Complex, which is Meijer and his solo visions of music, can be trusted to follow their tastes more than their briefcases. Moreover, the remixers are all from the scene that has built around the label, such as Garcon Taupe (who have just released on Narrominded), Spoelstra (who have an album coming up called The Almighty Internet) and Oscar Coen Polack himself. And finally, this EP is also available as a free mp3 download, so it is really more an introductory card to the label.

Albeit a rather restricted one. The music, starting from the song Here Is the Night, is restricted to basic keyboard and synthesizer beats and harmonies, very much like the electro beat experimented with in the early eighties and which Mute records took its first steps towards eternal fame in. Narrominded haven’t found their Depeche Mode yet, unfortunately. Only the original track has vocals, sung in perfect mimicry of the dark, almost gothic electro-pop that I remember from my early teenage-hood. Hunter Complex really states that he used a lot of synties from the eighties (bad luck for anybody who sold his old synthies ten years ago for cheap, because now they seem to be in big demand and you may get top dollar for it) but also perused the boundary-less recording possibilities available nowadays.

To the remixes: Garcon Taupe focuses on the percussive parts and dabbles with multi-layered beats and synthie-congas. Spoelstra reduces the song to a synthie-bedroom wizard version and what is possibly a one-take recording. It seems to me that at one point he hit the wrong note and – which is always a good tactic – remained hitting it until it starts to sound meant that way and becomes meaningful and fitting. Coen Oscar Polack finally takes out the rhythm totally and turns the song into a slowly flowing ambient track with the vocals reduced to a humming, transcending instrumental layer adding bass in the back. No, it is not like Psychic TV, only somewhat.

The final track, another Hunter Complex original, is another odd pop song somehow re-vived from the eighties. Fashion Street has high pitched comic vocals on the intro, glass chime synthies and even that sort of echoy saxophone and wailing guitar that makes late night, rainy street scenes in action movies from the eighties so cool. You know, the point in the plot where the main hero is all alone and has to get to grips with all he has done wrong and how come everything seems to be against him. That is usually the point where he drives his sports car through Los Angeles at night and from there onwards everything turns towards his way and he kills the main gangster / gets the girl finally / saves his friendship.

I am currently looking forward if that time machine effect will work out on the full length album that will be released this month. Otherwise I will have to go and see if I can find Live and Die in L.A. on DVD.
